"Dear Mama" vs. "Mother to Son"
Tupac Shakur shows trial and tribulation continuously during the emotional lyrics of his
song "Dear Mama." Shakur sympathetically explains the challenges he faces because of his
mother's undying encouragement, displaying sacrificial love. He describes the extraordinary
situations that his family faces, such as poverty, single parenting, and even feelings of failure.
Shakur describes his mother as a noble person who, by offering the necessities only a mother
could instill in her child both physically and morally, outshines the pessimistic aspects of his life.
By sharing personal knowledge from his childhood that many can relate to, the artist beautifully
captivates his audience.
Shakur lyrically shows sincere appreciation for his mother from beginning to end. "He
strongly emphasizes "You are appreciated" in the very first line, emphasizing the theme
"appreciation." Throughout the album, the artist repeatedly cites this line to effectively remind his
fans of his appreciation for having a good mother. Shakur tells the audience of a pessimistic
aspect of his life in the song's first verse, where he is "thrown out" of the house. He still longs to
see his mother, however and displays a sentimental attitude toward the situation. Shakur
describes her as a "black queen" even though his mother struggles with addiction, demonstrating
great respect for what she represents to him as her son.
On the other hand, "mother of son begins with Tupac recounting that, at 17 years of age,
his mother was thrown out of the house. They had "beef" at the moment, and he was irritated to

the point of never having to deal with her again. However, he got back to his thoughts later,
recognizing that no one should claim his mother's place. His family growing up poorer than their
peers are important truths, and Pac getting caught up with the wrong crowd and not having a dad
in his childhood. He also famously addresses the fact that during his childhood, she had once
been an alcoholic. In other terms, Tupac always wishes to let his mother know how he feels by
making an official representation of his affection while recognizing that he can never really
reward her. Moreover, he idolizes her as a sign of engagement, bravery, and strength while doing
so.
As we can see in both the song and poem, both moms had a hard tim raising their
children. However, even though they had many mistakes, their sons loved their moms so much.
Both guys idolize their mom as a paternal figure to look for. In one story, the mom was in jail,
and in the other, the mom was going through something difficult. "Dear Mama" talks about how
life is not easy, but you can get through it. While "Mother of son" talks about how to keep going
in life without focusing on the situation's negative side.
