Report Card Assignment
I chose to compare the scorecards from San Luis Obispo County, where I currently reside and
Shasta County, where I was born. I attained both report cards from childrennow.org for the
year of 2018-2019.
Demographics Overview
San Luis Obispo County 51,974 children, 36% living below the poverty line
White 54%
Asian 3%
Latinx 38%
Black 1%
Other 5%
Shasta County 37,648 children, 50% living below the poverty line
White 71%
Asian 3%
Latinx 15%
Black 1%
Other 9%

of black students in Shasta County did feel a connection to their school. I found this extremely
interesting because Shasta County has a much higher white population than San Luis Obispo. I
would have assumed that higher white populations would dominate culture and make it harder
for other groups to assimilate in school. In addition, in Shasta County, 50% of children lived
