The Wax Analogy Works
One could always wonder who they are, and the issue may seem a no-brainer to them.
Putting much thought into that and trying to understand how people function and what it takes
for their general functioning will be a whole lot harder than one could imagine. The paper aims
to understand Descarte’s understanding of the human body and mind by looking at his
meditation concerning the human mind’s and body nature. It shall deconstruct the two parts of
Descarte’s argument, give a critical evaluation of the arguments before concluding.
Descartes gets into meditation and wonders who he is. Through meditating, he gets to
different conclusions that later do not make sense to him, and he has to rethink everything over.
He starts by stating that “I have no senses whatever. Body, shape, extension, movement, and
place are all chimeras” (Descartes, 1998 p. 63). That is due to his doubting life and everything
around him. Descartes pursuit of answers gets him to understand the integral parts that he
cannot do without that he asserts, “Am I so tied to a body and to the senses that I cannot exist
without them?” (Descartes, 1998 p. 63). In this pursuit, he decides to avoid anything that casts
doubt on his arguments to remain with unshaken conclusions.
To start with, Descartes acknowledges that he has body parts such as hands and legs, but
then these body parts were “the very same as are discerned in a corpse, and which I referred to
by the name body.”” (Descartes, 1998 p. 64). From his statement, he concludes that a body will
always exist even in a lifeless human; thus, he goes ahead and tries to find meaning to who he
really is. It occurred to him that he had life in him, and he could partake in various activities a
corpse could not; he attributes the life activities to the soul. Since the soul is invisible, Descartes
is left wondering as to what it is, for “by “body, I understand all that is capable of being
bounded by some shape, of being enclosed in a place, and of filling up a space in such a way as
