Even though men and women have different genitalia and sex organs, the bodies main
purpose of these is fertilization. Within the thesis we will be describing the anatomy and
functions of the male and female sexual organs and the role that sex organs play in fertilization.
Also, there will be tracking the movements of the sperm and the egg from their development to
Many may remember from childhood discovering their “strange” external parts of their body.
Over the years, some may have experienced teasing from the opposite sex due to the obvious
development and outright curiosity. Most are curious of the opposite sex and would gladly
examine as a result of that curiosity.
From birth, a female has the necessary tools to one day succeed in fertilization. Most do
not know that newborn girls already have all of the ova that she will ever need (pg. 62). The
external sex organs are all similar in nature; all are unique and different in appearance.
The female external sex organs are called the pudendum or vulva. The mons veneris, the libia
majora, and minora, the clitoris, and the vaginal opening are all the parts referred to as the vulva
(pg. 63). The mons vereris is the fatty tissue that is visible from the outside when standing up.
This is located above the urethral and is covered by pubic hair after puberty. The main purpose of
this is to protect from pressure on the pubic bone and can
also produce stimulation if caressed.
The labia majora and the labia minora work together
to protect and cover the urethral, clitoris, and vaginal
openings. Both the labia majora and the labia minora
vary in appearance in some woman but serve almost the

same purpose, including sexual stimulation and pleasure. The clitoris is the female equivalent to
the penis. When aroused, the clitoris becomes filled with blood and becomes erect. Because of
the rich supply of nerve endings, it is very sensitive to stimulation and varies in size similar to a
penis (pg. 65). The vaginal opening is the sex organ that houses the penis during intercourse and
the means of exit for childbirth and menstruation. During sexual arousal, the vagina expands in
length and width, but resembles a collapsed muscular tube when at rest (pg 71).
The vagina consists of both internal and external parts and connect the uterus to the outside of
the body ( Brichford, 2009). The vagina is often called the birth canal and is where the penis
deposits the semen from ejaculation during sex.
The internal sex organs not only involve the vagina but also
the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the uterus, and the cervix. Each has
their own responsibility in relations to reproduction. The ovaries are responsible for producing
estrogen and eggs which are released into the fallopian tubes during ovulation. If fertilization is
unsuccessful, the egg will be washed away during menstruation. The fallopian tubes are where
fertilization occurs and the fertilized egg will travel to the uterus for implantation.
Often referred to as the womb, the uterus is what holds the baby during pregnancy. If
fertilization does not occur, the lining of the uterus will be excreted during menstruation through
