Comparison and contrast of in whose backyard situation to lake shoal and the Africville article
The situation described in the video "in whose backyard," the lake Shoal situation, and the article about
Africville represent dire situations, which communities experience as they relate to environmental issues,
which they have to endure with. "In whose backyard" highlights the issue of environmental racism where
the Nova Scotian members share their struggles against environmental racism (ENRICH Project, 2014).
The community members experience the disproportionate location of toxic wastes and other hazards to the
blacks. On the other hand, the lake shoal situation has endured imposed isolation after expropriating the
individual's ancestral lands to create a water supply infrastructure (Lorraine, 2016). The community has
been cut off from necessary amenities. It has been restricted to an island separated from the mainland, and
the community lacks a way of transporting refuse or sewage from the isolated area. For Africville, the
community has experienced poverty and discrimination, which presents numerous challenges for the
community. The community lacks basic amenities denied by the City of Halifax, and the people lack
sewerage, clean water, and the problem of extreme garbage disposal (McRae, 2021). The surrounding area
has undesirable constructions, including a dump, an infectious disease hospital, and a prison.
How the situations show impacts of health determinants
The situations described in "in whose backyard," the Lake Shoal situation and Africville are illustrations of
health determinants because they present a perspective of the extreme health inequality, which certain
people (of color) experience. These communities have been neglected, and it highlights the need for the
government to establish healthy and safe communities and assist them in addressing their health challenges.
These communities live in areas that expose them to toxic environmental wastes, poor disposal of wastes,
and lacking access to clean water, which affects their health.
My feelings about the Shoal Lake Situation
The federal government has failed the people around the Lake Shoal region by making false promises as
the people suffer from the dire situation. The issue represents a lack of respect for human rights as the
people have been denied the ability to transport sewerage and refuse. There is no available option for
proper treatment, which culminates in an area designated with garbage. The living conditions are
inhabitable and human and thus need urgency before it escalates to worse situations.
What should be done about the situation
The situation around Lake Shoal is dire because of the continued failure to observe the Tripartite
Agreement of 1989 on environmental management between lake Shoal and Winnipeg. Addressing the issue
necessitates honoring this treaty to give the city a say in restricting industrial, domestic, and commercial
endeavors of the Lake. There have to be alternative economic development opportunities for maintaining
the water quality. There is a need to address the environmental racism in the "in whose backyard" video to
ensure that all people can access equal health amenities. Reclamation of the will also assist in avoiding the
spread of infectious diseases.
Something I can do as an Individual
My individual measures would include addressing all the environmental hazards and addressing the social
determinants of health. Individual measures of addressing the environmental hazards include proper
disposal of waste products and rising awareness about proper water use and limited community resources.
The other measures comprise reusing, recycling, and reducing the use of critical resources. Volunteering in
clean-ups could also assist in cleaning the community. Water conservation and sustainable use could also
assist o address the situation.
