AGE AND ETHNIC COMPOSITION IN THE UNITED STATES 2
Age and Ethnic Composition in The United States
The current age structure trends appear to be rapidly increasing from ages 65 and older in
the United States. It is one of the most significant demographic trends observed in the United
States of America's history. This population's increase is reportedly explained to be due to baby
boomers born between 1946 and 1964. For instance, between 2014 and 2060, the United States
will experience a considerable change in population growth based on age, sex, and race. As a
result, aging populations pose social impacts as the older population will become more racially
and ethnically diverse. Therefore, the document is concerned with how the age structure of the
U.S. population change and how it is expected to continue in the coming decades.
Recent trends indicate that the United States population is becoming more racial and
ethnically diverse. However, the diversity is still concentrated in the youngest population
(Roberts et al., 2018). For example, in 2014, Roberts et al. (2018) argue that more than 3 out of 4
people ages 65 and older were None-Hispanic whites. At this time, only half of the children
under age 18 were white None-Hispanic. Markides & Rote (2019) argues that as the population
continues to be more diverse, it is certain that more than half are projected to be None-Hispanic
white by 2060. Between 2030 to 2060, the share of None-Hispanic white will drop by
approximately 17%, while Hispanic increase by 11% to 22% (Roberts et al. 2018). It is evident
that in the next several decades, the United States' older population is becoming more racially
and ethnically based. As a result, the projected population growth is accompanied by several
social challenges.
Similarly, the number of people ages 65 and older in the U.S. is projected to increase
from 46 million currently to 98 million by 2060. Between 2020 to 2030, the number of aged
persons is projected to be almost 18 million (Markides & Rote 2019). As a result, aging
