POLITICAL IDEAS VERSUS INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION 2
Political Ideas Versus Industrial Revolution
The rapid changes in the industrial revolution changed the world more than the political
ideas. Most political ideas are as a result of the influence from the industrial revolution. Based on
the illustrations drawn from “The Making of Industrial Society, it is clear that the political ideas
were shaped as a result of the industrial revolution. This is related to the fact that the
technological advancements led to the production of mass products with the use of machines
which replaced human labour (Bentley, 2014). This patterns in industrial revolutions led to the
innovations in industries such as the introduction of new sources of energy among them coal,
petroleum and later on electricity.
Thus factory system dominated in the industrial production whereby new ideas were
generated. These ideas encouraged new divisions of labour, belt-driven assembly lines as well as
mass production. This means that the political governments that existed during those days had to
adjust to the new wave of industrial revolution. This is because when large businesses flourished
which contained the elements of monopolies, trusts and cartels that intended to mitigate
competition and keep the prices high, governments were often too slow to control these
monopolies. This translates to the fact that it is the things that change the world and not the
political ideas (Bentley, 2014). The innovation of steam-powered boats, developments in
infrastructure and other industrial developments have been deemed as the most significant as the
ideas of popular sovereignty because the industrial revolutions have initiated dynamic changes in
the world unlike the political opinions.
