1. The hot/controversial topic I discovered was how micro-organisms will soon play a large role in
the alternative protein industry. Technology now allows food scientists to use fermentation and
cell growth to produce meat-substitutes that can mirror the flavor of actual meat products more
effectively than plants. While this technology is still relatively new, it is already causing
controversy as many are unsure about the health ramifications of consuming something made
from what they see to be “bacteria.” However, the use of micro-organisms could prove to be a
huge factor in saving the human race from future food crises caused by climate change. The use
of meat substitutes made from these organisms could also alleviate the strain felt by the meat
industry, allowing the harsh conditions maintained in farms and factories to be reduced.
2. When focusing on men and women, certain differences can be seen on a biological level that
differentiates the two chromosomal genders. These differences occur due to the biological needs
and abilities of these genders and have evolved over millions of years to best accommodate the
reproductive needs of humans. People with XY chromosomes tend to have muscles more
accustomed to large outputs of energy, while people with XX chromosomes tend to have muscles
more suited for balance and accurate performance. XX chromosomal people also tend to have
more fat around their thighs and buttocks, as they are the biological givers of life and must
perform the birthing process. XY chromosomal people tend to have body fat distributed primarily
in their abdomens, protecting their vital organs and providing an extra layer of body mass. This
also leads to one gender typically being larger than the other in terms of body mass and height.
3. The first question I would like to pose is “What is the most prominent and manageable cause of
diabetes in children?” Clearly, the answer in broad terms is sugar, but what specific products,
recipes, and ingredients are particularly harmful to this new generation of children and how can
they be minimized. The second question is “How can farmers best be supported right now to
avoid a national food crisis?” As climate change continues to wreak havoc, farming will become
more challenging and less profitable. Farmers need to be supported now in order to maintain the
industry. The final question I have is “By what processes are foods bio-engineered and how does
that affect their nutritional content?” The engineering of food will likely only continue into the
future, so it is best to fully understand the current procedures behind it and formulate ideas
regarding how to improve the nutrients of food made in this way.
4. According to what I understand, there are very few differences between sugar and high-fructose
corn syrup. They are both relatively equal in their ability to cause harm to the body, but both are
alright in moderation. However, HFC is used far more frequently than sugar because it is far
cheaper to produce as corn is a cheap crop. The sugar industry seems to pay for a significant
amount of marketing to dissuade customers from buying products with HFC, as it is seen as less
natural and more harmful. This is meant as a way for them to recover their lost business and
compete with a cheaper product that produced the same effects as their own. All in all, neither
additive is healthy, but neither is more harmful than the other. When consumed in moderation,
both sugar and HFC can provide a pleasant taste to otherwise bland foods. (And without HFC,
sweets would be a lot more expensive).
