Progressive Vs. Positive Discipline
Progressive and positive discipline are strategies for solving employee issues in the
workplace. Both progressive and positive disciplines focus on protecting employment and
company policy. Engelbrecht & Strumpher (2018) argues that progressive and positive discipline
strategies enhance employee compliance with working terms and conditions. HR managers use
progressive and positive discipline strategies to ensure high productivity.
Progressive discipline is often associated with the negative discipline. Abrams & Nolan
(2019) reveal that companies use a four-step procedure for progressive discipline that includes
sending warning verbally, sending a written warning, suspension, and termination. In essence,
Abrams & Nolan (2019) consider progressive discipline as a strict way of dealing with workers
because it doesn’t require intrinsic motivation to improve behavior. This disciplinary style
provides a misconduct record, allowing HR managers to track behavioral modification (Abrams
& Nolan, 2019).
On the other hand, positive discipline is often flexible and collaborative and focuses on
mentoring, enhancing employee responsibility, and improving problem-solving. According to
Welch (2018), positive discipline focuses on addressing issues that influence employees to
violate company policy. This style encourages the employee to grow and change, fitting the
desired behavior. Welch (2018) states that positive discipline is non-punitive, meaning that the
manager doesn’t dole out punishment. Instead, he/she offers mentoring sessions. Even though
positive discipline is humanistic, it is often criticized for its inefficiency in tracking a misconduct
history.
