Introduction
3M, a mining organization is based in Minnesota and is a multinational company that
operates in over sixty countries globally. The organization produces more than fifty-five
thousand products of several types like in healthcare, safety, automotive, manufacturing,
commercial solutions, mining, and transportation. Since its formation, it has been aiming at
providing the best possible services for its customers globally. The following case study
highlights the 3M organization and some of its practices.
3M, an organization formerly referred to as Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing
Company was formed by five people. These five businessmen started a multinational
company that operates in more than sixty countries internationally. Their urge to start the
company originated from the desire to work hard on different areas they were interested in to
effectively grow their business to a much organized and global entity. Just like any other
organization, 3M began to face several organizational issues in the 1990s making it
restructure in the international markets.
The idea of restructuring was not very clinical and forced some of the employees to
push themselves back in terms of what they could have produced. However, in 1990 De
Simone became the chief executive officer and used different managerial techniques, but his
proposal was rejected by the senior management. The reason for the decline was that his
arguments in terms of the proposal did not focus much on the innovative areas, a factor that
led to the organization’s decline in 1991. The organization’s president Mr. McKnight focused
on innovation, a feature which De Simone’s plan did not entail. This reason led to the decline
of De Simone’s proposal of change in the organization as planned.
The main strengths the organization had were the availability of a group of experts,
scientists hired by the organization’s president, Mr. McKnight. The hiring of these experts
