Ethical Dilemma Analysis: Should there be a national policy mandating HPV vaccinations
for adolescent girls and boys?
The primary purpose of this paper is to explore and analyze an ethical dilemma that
discusses whether there should be a national policy that mandates HPV vaccinations for
adolescent girls and boys. Vaccination is a healthcare requirement that ensures people are
protected from infections. However, people have presented different views about vaccination
where some people have opposed it while others have supported it. Thus, this assessment will
determine whether to embrace a policy that allows HVP vaccinations for adolescent girls and
boys based on moral principles, ethical theory, professional guidelines, and laws and regulations.
Typically, the ethical dilemma in HPV vaccination is relevant in the United States healthcare
system. In the United States, HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection. It can
cause many cases of cervical cancer and other types of cancer (Hirth, 2019). Fortunately, some
of these infections can be prevented through HPV vaccination.
Consequently, the ethical dilemma affects healthcare in the United States because there is
a need to prevent HPV-related infections. However, not all jurisdictions have accepted HPV
vaccination of adolescent boys and girls. Only four jurisdictions in the United States that
currently require HPV vaccine for boys and girls entering school. That is, the District of
Columbia, Virginia, Rhode Island, and Puerto Rico (Hirth, 2019). Nonetheless, the writer needs
to explore the role of ethical theory, moral principles, professional guidelines, and state and
national standards to deliberate the relevance of a national policy that embraces HPV
vaccination. More importantly, the writer will explore the relevance of HPV vaccination policy
in nursing practice. Nurses play crucial roles in preventative care. Therefore, the ethical dilemma
