SOCIAL INEQUALITY IN THE MEDIA 2
Part A: Deviance
Deviance refers to behavior that does not meet the social standards and cultural norms of
an organization. It, therefore, depends upon an individual’s subculture and culture. The deviant
actions may be considered to be effective in different periods and places. The negative deviant that
I have witnessed is playing loud music in a workplace, and it is informal. The deviant violated
social norms by disturbing other individuals within the workplace (Goode, 2015). Also, loud music
results in hearing damage, so I talked to the person playing the music to stop.
Additionally, people in the workplace considered that as rudeness, and they opposed the
practice. The person experienced the loss of respect from society, and legal action was
implemented. A functionalist and conflict theorist could view that as deviant behavior in the
following ways. First, he could say that loud music in a workplace is not good. However, playing
loud music in places such as concerts and clubs is acceptable (Agboola & Salawu, 2011). Thus, it
is essential to identify places and times where playing loud music is acceptable to ensure reduced
confrontation within an organization as a functionalist.
