Draw the structures showing this:
*Note when I say electrons, I mean valence electrons (the outermost electrons)
1. a) Boron has 3 electrons, while each chlorine has 7 electrons. There are 3 chlorine
atoms, so there are 24 (7x3+3) electrons in total.
b) Arsenic has 5 electrons, while each fluorine has 7 electrons. There are 5 fluorine
atoms, so there are 40 electrons in total.
c) Nitrogen has 5 electrons, while each oxygen has 6 electrons. There are 3 oxygen
atoms, so you would think that there are 23 (6x3+5) electrons in total, but because
there is a negative charge there are 24 electrons. Since there is a double bond and there
are three oxygen’s around the nitrogen so the electrons can move, which means that
there is resonance.
d) Carbon has 4 electrons, while each oxygen has 6 electrons. There are 2 oxygen atoms,
so there are 16 electrons in total.
e) There are 3 oxygen’s, and each oxygen has 6 electrons, so there are 18 electrons in
total. There is a resonance because there is a double bond and 2 oxygens, so the
electrons can move.
f) Phosphorus has 5 electrons, oxygen has 6 electrons, and chlorine has 7 electrons, so
there are 18 electrons in total.
