Maslow's hierarchy of needs in providing motivation focuses on people seeking
motivation from fulfilling needs. The needs include physiological needs, feeling secure, feeling
loved and belonging, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs (Fallatah & Syed, 2018). The
sequence of needs follows achieving basic needs and advancing to higher needs. One of the pros
of Maslow's hierarchy of needs is assisting in summarizing people's needs. In an organization or
business setup, marketers advertise to appeal to the individual needs of clients. One of the cons is
the theory lacks a way to test satisfaction per each need of each level empirically. Moreover, the
hierarchy of needs model is simplistic. For instance, several needs can be satisfied at once.
Another con is the hierarchy focuses on needs from western cultures.
Frederick Herzberg's theory on motivation focuses on employee satisfaction by using
two dimensions, hygiene, and motivation. Hygiene issues focus on salary, supervision,
decreasing dissatisfaction among employees' and improving the work environment (Herzberg,
2017). Motivators under the theory include recognition and awarding achievement to make
workers creative, productive, and committed.
One of the pros of Herzberg's motivation theory is motivation comes from within the
employee. Another pro is how companies deal with employees' problems (Herzberg, 2017).
Needing employees' needs is a priority in enhancing motivation. One of the cons of the theory is
job satisfaction by employees does not always translate to creativity, productivity, and
commitment. Another con is that the theory ignores external factors that motivate employees,
such as competitors' employees receiving better pay. McGregor's motivation theory focuses on
employees' motivation by seeking responsibilities and performing as per set goals (Daneshfard
& Rad, 2020). One of McGregor's motivation theory's pros is promoting employees' optimistic
nature based on set goals. Another pro is employees love working since the tasks relate to a
