PROJECT: Writing Your Congressman—Immigration ReformThe Fourteenth Amendment extended citizenship to anyone born on American soil (jus soli—“the law of the soil”). With 11 million illegal immigrants living in the United States, the debate over immigration is now a major political issue that most Americans expect lawmakers to address. Congress has attempted to stop the flow of illegal immigrants from entering the country. In December 2005, the House passed H.R. 4437, the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005, but it failed in the Senate. The House bill would have enlisted military and local law enforcement in stopping illegal entrants while requiring employers to verify the legal status of their workers. In addition, the bill authorized building a fence along parts of the U.S.–Mexico border. The Senate countered with S. 2611, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, in May 2006. The bill increased security along the United States’ border with Mexico and allowed long-time illegal immigrants to gain legal status, while increasing the number of guest workers in the U.S. through a new “blue card” visa program. The bill was passed by the Senate, but a compromise with the House proved elusive.Immigration reform was a hot topic in the 2016 presidential election. Republican Donald J. Trump rode a populist wave of support to victory partly by promising to complete a physical wall along the U.S.–Mexico border. In this activity, you will investigate the immigration issue and complete two assignments.Assignment 1: Investigate the differing points of view on the need for immigration reform by accessing internet news sites and reviewing both sides of the issue. Based on your research, decide what your personal stand is on this issue. Write a letter to your senator asking him to support or oppose immigration reform based on specific reasons you have found through your investigation. This letter should include a minimum of three reasons supporting your viewpoint. There is a correct form in writing to your congressman.
