Introduction
Accreditation refers to a review mechanism that enables health organizations to prove
their capacity to fulfill legal and regulatory obligations defined by bodies such as AMAP,
JCAHO, FAACT, and ACHC among others. Accreditation is considered to be one of the main
requirements to determine a company's efficiency. A comprehensive accreditation procedure is a
symbol to patients that an institution in health care has performed an exceptional performance
review and has attained a rigorous set of expertise in patient safety and quality of care. My
preferred choice of the healthcare organization accrediting body is the Joint Commission on
Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAHO). The organization got established as an independent non-
profit institution whose aim was voluntary accrediting of hospitals. Since the early 1950s,
JCAHO has become the prominent leaders of healthcare organizations accreditor (The Joint
Commission, 2010). The mission statement ‘To continuously improve the safety and quality of
care provided to the public through healthcare accreditation and related services that support
performance improvement in healthcare organizations’ has been the leading motive for the
organization.
Effectiveness of the Accrediting Body
The next level of authority is the policy and procedure established by the Joint
Commissions in order to resolve the various requirements of accreditation of a health facility.
The Joint Commission will accredit healthcare facilities following policies and procedures.
Unless the protocols and procedures are followed, the Joint Committee 'is in no position to cite
or fine health organizations, for failure to meet these requirements, although it can result in a loss
of accreditation, which may mean that Medicare and Medicaid services are losing millions of
