INTRODUCTION TO SUPPORT AND MOVEMENT
Support is the ability of an organism to bear its weight and maintain its body from while
movement is the displacement of part or the whole body of the living organism.
The necessity for support in animals
Provide surface for the attachment of body muscles and body organs.
Protect delicate body e.g the skull protects the brain and other olfactory organs, the
ribs protect the organs in the chest cavity.
It maintains body shapes.
The necessity for support in plants
Provides upright growth to get maximum sunlight for photosynthesis.
Holds the flowers in position for easy pollination.
Holds the flowers in position for effective dispersal.
The necessity for movement in plants
To search for food.
To escape from the predators.
To search for mates.
The necessity for movement in plants
To expose the leaves to trap maximum light for photosynthesis.
To enable roots to seek water.
Support in animals is brought about by the skeleton. Muscles are attached to the skeleton,
movement is brought about by contraction and relation of muscle against the skeleton. There are
three types of skeleton namely;
Hydrostatic skeleton
It’s fluid under pressure enclosed in a body cavity surrounded by circular and longitudinal
muscles which contract against it to bring about movement. Its found in soft-bodied animals such
as earthworms and caterpillars.
Endoskeleton
It is made up of bones or cartilages. Muscles are connected to the bones by tendons while bones
are joined to each other by ligaments. Compost of living tissues and the muscle is external.
