Business ethics: Encouraging whistle blowing
In the article, Zhang, Liao, and Yuan observe that whistle blowing is a significant
organizational control mechanism through which employees can expose misconduct and
corruption at work, especially in an age when such cases are prevalent. The study concentrated
on the process through which ethical leadership encourages or discourages employees to report
non-compliant misdeeds internally (Zhang, Liao &Yuan, 2016). The methodology comprised
collecting data through a survey distributed to the participants who were leader-member pairs
and working in a large division of the Southern China’s central bank. The results, which were
analyzed by the hierarchical linear modelingestablished that ethical leadership positively
correlated to internal whistle blowing by the subordinates (Zhang et al., 2016). For effective
results, the researchers controlled the ethical climate and established that an ethical environment
that comprehensively arbitrated the association between internal whistle blowing and ethical
leadership hugely influenced collective moral commitment.
In my opinion, the findings from this research underscore the need for organization
leaders to instill an ethical leadership that allows employees to report irregular work activities
such as corruption and discrimination. Sometimes, employees fail to report corrupt practices
because they fear no one will listen to them or that the management is involved as well. It
demonstrates that when employees feel safe and encouraged to expose wrongdoings within the
company, they can whistle blow early enough for appropriate actions to be taken to avert the
situation. In other words, it is the role of the management to cultivate an ethical social
environment. Accordingly, employees feel protected and part of the organization culture that
promotes good work practices, integrity, and accountability. Given the methodology the
