History of Facebook in Photos
Facebook has an interesting story, a classic Silicon Valley success story. The Facebook
idea was hatched in Harvard dorm and now is one of the influential and powerful companies
across the world. It has made Zuckerberg into a legendary icon, and it has turned a tennis shoe
and hoodie into the height of the tech industry. Drawing illustrations from History of Facebook
in Photos by Matt Weinberger, this paper gives a summary/explains what happened in 2003.
The Facebook idea was hatched at Harvard’s Kirkland House dormitory. In 2003,
Zuckerberg first built a Facemash, a website. It was a hot or not-style site, and Zuckerberg used
photos of his classmates. He got the pictures from the school administration by hacking the
dormitory ID files. Facemash got 22000 page views. This was from 450 individuals, and within
its first 4 hours, the site was up.
The Harvard administration after a few days later ordered that the site be taken down due
to security and copyright concerns. Disciplinary action was taken against Zuckerberg by the
Harvard administration. However, Zuckerberg was allowed to stay at the university. Undeterred
by the Facemash debacle, he launched Facebook in the following year.
