OPTION 1: CULTURE AND THE CHANGING AMERICAN FAMILY
Introduction
The views and understanding of what an American family is and must consist of has
dramatically changed since the Baby Boomers Era. With every new generation born and grown,
there comes new needs and desires as well as what that generation considers important. There are
several observations and opinions to why this family image has changed so fiercely from work
occupations, desire to travel more, to a reduced need to produce heirs.
What do the numbers say?
In the 1960’s the traditional family was seen as a household that consisted of a male and
female who held the position as father and mother and typically was paired with multiple
children. Statistically during this time 73% of families were built in this form and in their first
