Identification of Focus for Community Teaching (Topic Selection):
The topic is the planning for healthy pregnancy in women with type 1 diabetes targeting the
women within the child bearing age. The teaching will take place in Miami, Florida. The reason
for focusing on the women with type 1 diabetes is to educate them how they can maintain good
health during pregnancy. The best intervention methods to focus on are insulin therapy and
balanced diet.
Epidemiological Rationale for Topic (Statistics Related to Topic):
Type 1 diabetes is a major health problem worldwide. There have been increased cases of
this disease, especially in people who have not observed healthy eating and physical activity. The
study performed by Rogers, Kim, Banerjee, and Lee (2017), revealed that 64,000 people in the
United States are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes every year. This is a large number, which
means that the entire United States population is at risk of this disease. All the 64,000 people fell
under the ages 0 to 64. This age range covers all the women who can become pregnant.
Therefore, some women in the United States are likely to have type 1 diabetes during pregnancy.
The future dangers of disease are determined by comparing the past infections with the
current infections. If the rate of the disease is spreading is higher than in the past, it means that
the disease poses many dangers in the future. According to Mayer-Davis et al. (2017), cases of
type 1 diabetes increased by 1.4% in 2003. It means that the population is at higher risk of future
severity of the disease. Type 1 diabetes is not as dangerous as some other diseases like cancer.
However, it has adverse effects on specific populations making it more dangerous. For example,
type 1 diabetes has negative impacts on pregnant women and newborns.
Feldman and Brown (2016) found that 0.1 to 0.2 % of all pregnant women are type 1
diabetic. As a result, they are at the risk of developing risky health conditions that can affect their
wellbeing or the health of the unborn baby. For example, large for gestational and macrosomia
complications affects one-half of newborns whose mothers had type 1 diabetes during pregnancy
(Kristensen et al., 2019). Therefore, we can say that type 1 diabetes during pregnancy is not good
for pregnant women and the infant. These statistics show that there is a need to provide women
with education on how they can maintain good health despite type 1 diabetes.
Teaching Plan Criteria
Your teaching plan will be graded based on its effectiveness and relevance to the population
selected. This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the
assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
Nursing Diagnosis:
A glycated hemoglobin test will be performed to assess the patients’ average blood sugar
level within the last five months.
