SOCW 3002: Understanding the Aspects and Dimensions of Human Behavior

A cohort is a group of individuals sharing a characteristic or experience over time. A

good example is birth cohorts which is a group of individuals born during a specific period. My

birth cohort group is generation Y. I think we are quite similar to generation Z. Specifically;

Millennial generation members are older than members of Generation Z. Generation Z are

individuals born after 1995. First and foremost, Gen Z is technologically progressive and has

never stayed without smartphones or the Internet (Dolot, 2018). Growing up in the world

producing tons of information every second, they developed a mechanism to absorb and filter

significant amounts of new information every day. Moreover, their independence influences the

way they behave on social media - striving for privacy, interest in social media influencers as

examples of independent personalities, etc.

Several themes have shaped my life course perspective, including ambition, love, and

education. One of my overarching goals in life is to create an experience where I can do what I

want, where I want to, and when I choose to. My ambition stems from this goal. College was a

turning point in my life; I bought into the idea that I would find a job after graduation and work

in a big company for the rest of my life. Everything in that environment pushed me down that

road. Our professors promised to teach us concepts we would use on the job. To add to that,

events involving guest lecturers gave us advice on how to move up in the corporate world. I also

received tremendous love and care from my parents, which taught me always to maintain good

relationships with people closest to me. My birthdays reminded me that I was getting older and

had to make a few changes in my life.

Some changes and surprises have been a part of my life journey to date. I was fortunate

enough to get a good education, which resulted in the surprise of getting a better-paying job.
