POST A DESCRIPTION OF THE DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF
EVIDENCED-BASED PRACTICE. THEN PROVIDE AN EVALUATION OF FACTORS
THAT MIGHT SUPPORT OR IMPEDE YOUR EFFORTS IN ADOPTING EVIDENCE -
BASED PRACTICE OR EVIDENCE-BASED PROGRAMS.
Evidence-based practice is a method used by most professionals in the healthcare
industry. It is defined as a translation of medical findings on a patient to clinical
decision-making. From the definition itself, we can infer that if one used EBP, they
are simply abandoning the idea of using outdated healthcare delivery practices.
Usually, those who work in the healthcare industry must be skilled and
knowledgeable in using the Evidence-based practice. In clinical practice, one must
follow a series of steps. The first step is for the healthcare person to ask a question.
In this stage, the individual must ask any questions regarding the clinical setting they
will work on. The second stage is to gather all the necessary evidence needed for the
evaluation. Some call this stage as the Literature Research stage because people
who work on this will have to conduct a deep literature search in order to attain valid
data. The third step is to appraise the literature which just means to sort or organize
peer-reviewed sources that one obtained from the previous stage. After that, it is
expected that the findings will be used by the individual as a guide in decision-
making. Once a decision has been made, outcomes will be evaluated and later on
disseminated.
As I’ve mentioned before, social or medical workers should be skilled in using EBP.
According to an article by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), a
symposium from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in 2007 revealed that
social workers must be critical in in the assessment and diagnosis of the intervention
so that they will accurately solve a particular problem. It was also mentioned that
EBT can be adapted based on the identity of the patient involved in the case. Due to
it’s ability to be incorporated based on different situations, EBT has been used in
settings concerning various mental conditions. Despite of this, there are many risks in
using this method since again, knowledgeable professionals are the only ones
capable of using this. One example would be the California Evidence-Based
Clearinghouse (CEBC) which offers protection for children. Their definition of EBT is
a combination of three factors which are: Best Research Evidence, Best Clinical
Experience, and Consistency with family and and client values.
