Analyze the following questions associated with your chosen article and discuss
them using concepts you learned in this course.
1. What ideals, effects, and consequences are at stake?
a. Your Rationale: The ideal thought when we go somewhere to eat is
that we are going to spend within budget and get quality food worth
what we expected to pay. The price manipulation practiced by
restaurants are meant to make us subconsciously choose items higher
in cost, leaving us with a bigger bill than we anticipated. Ultimately
making that idea irrelevant. The affect of that happening may lead to a
more conscious decision making process to be asserted when
frequenting establishments, consequently putting a negative effect on
possible Profits.
b. Supporting Evidence:
This article is basically an industry secret tell all. Pricing strategies
used within the itself mentions the subconscious decision making
process being manipulated by a form of statistically proven strategies
to subconsciously current our way of thinking to produce a higher
profit from sales.

b. Supporting Evidence:
Written in the article it states that yes, the pricess are in fact on
menus and their placement are enough to trigger the decision making
process of a majority of people, which is again not immorality driven
its just business.
3. What would a Utilitarian recommend? (tip: happiness for all)
a. Your Rationale:
Utilitarianism is a belief that we should act in the best interest of what
will produce the most happiness amongst everyone, alternatively if
there needs to be some immoral acts or unhappiness in the midst, it is
okay as long as more people are happier from the outcome. It is likely
Utilitarian’s would believe the pricing strategy produces the most
good so it would be considered a just action with justifiable reasoning.
b. Supporting Evidence:
Studies have shown that when a person is persuaded into an option
unconsciously because of a more intriguing description as well as a
mod expensive sounding name produced a higher approval rating and
more consumers said they were happy with their purchase. So
majority is happy thus in line with utilitarianism beliefs.
4. What would a Kantian recommend? (tip: look at intentions)
a. Your Rationale:
Kantians believe that people should be treated as ends and not merely
as means. The motive behind the price manipulating tactics are
considerably immoral. Getting customers to spend more and a
deceptive fashion would suggest that the customer is being treated as
a dollar sign and not as a value customer. Kantians would consider
that too be against their philosophy and would suggest a less
deceptive way of conducting business.
b. Supporting Evidence:
Coercing customers to spend more by way of being deceptive is
immoral according to Kantian beliefs. It suggests that people are
acting on selfish motive because the nature of the action. The article
states that it is in general a wildly practiced form of insuring a higher
profit by way of mental elusion.
