In the space below, write a short paragraph about what you already knew about
the topic you selected prior to this course, based on your personal history or
experiences. This may include assumptions, beliefs, or values related to the topic.
Be as detailed as possible.
What I knew about the South African Apartheid was what I was told by different people and from what
the movie I watched about it. I know it was a dark time for black South African. Nelson Mandela was a
freedom fighter as well as Winnie Mandela his wife at the time. During the Apartheid, interracial
marriage banned, it was illegal. There was segregation and racism. Black people were not allowed to
vote, schools and universities were segregated. During that time if people opposed the current
government they were thrown in prison. Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years and after his
release he went on to become the President a few years later.

like to know? Place your answers in the right-hand column.
Identify one question
about the topic that you
are curious about.
What role did Nelson Mandela play in helping to end
Apartheid?
Describe why this
question matters to you
personally.
It matters to be because he overcame hate with love
and unite an entire nation. This is a part of History I
should know.
Describe why this
question matters to
society.
With all the hate in the world today, I think it’s
important for society to know the role Nelson
Mandela play in helping to end Apartheid, and what
he endured because of it and he was still nonviolent
and did not have hate in his heart.
Identify a second
question about the topic
you are curious about.
How did Nelson Mandela survive 27 years in prison?
Describe why this
question matters to you
personally.
It matters because I’m interested in knowing how he
survived and did not make it break him or turn him
into a hate filled individual
Describe why this
question matters to
society.
I think it matters to society for the same reason it
matters to me. How did he survive and still manage
not to be hateful?
