Abstract
Nursing theory enhances autonomy, communication, and accountability of nursing practice.
Florence Nightingale was a prominent, influential nursing theorist that based her teachings on the
influence and impact of the environment for patient recovery. She stressed the goal of nursing is
to place the patient in the best possible conditions for nature to act promoting good health.
Nightingale’s Environmental Theory was based on ten ideals known as Nightingale’s Canons. It
is through this theory; Nightingale examined the art and science of nursing.
