Dear Secretary Azar:
As an active Nurse and member of the American Nurses Association (ANA), I am committed to
engaging in health policy issues and client advocacy. Unusual circumstances prompted me to
write this letter concerning genetic discrimination in the school system. These are serious
concerns in legislation and need attention by the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions
Committee; to create a new cause of action for parents' genetic discrimination claims.
I recently encountered a situation and would like feedback regarding this matter. A Mrs. Chadam
contacted me regarding her son Coleman who was recently kicked out of school because his
health record reflected, he was a Cystic fibrosis carrier based off a test conducted at infancy. The
subject stated that her son recently enrolled and submitted health forms which were unlawfully
disclosed; furthermore, additional medical information with no prior authorization, permission,
or notice by the school also was unlawfully disclosed.
At that same school Colman was removed from, a set of twins also attended; the twins both had
Cystic Fibrosis; therefore, because the one child is a carrier, he was not allowed to attend the
school because the other children cannot be around other people that may have the disease due
to, being prone to infections. It is a clear case of genetic discrimination (AJMG,2016).
