The Influences of Technologies on Our Decisions
The world of technology is ever-evolving and has proven to be part of everything we do in our
daily activities more than it did some years ago. For nurses, many of the technological changes in
the medical field impact nurses in many ways. We are always figuring out what will come next
with these changes in technology. These new devices can increase work complexity, yet they can
decrease the workload, improve patient outcomes, and reduce medical errors.
Several technologies are available to support decision making in healthcare to include
technologies that promote care coordination, patient self-management, and community health.
The nursing specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science
to manage, communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice is called
nurse informatics (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018).
-Explain One Technology Personally Used in Healthcare
After shadowing a Nurse Informaticist to understand their role and impact on healthcare
decision-making, one piece of technology used within nursing is frequently called e-MAR or
electronic medication administration records. This technology is a report that acts as a legal
record by maintaining a digital log of all medications administered to a patient at a facility by a
healthcare professional; it is an alternative to using paper-based MAR charts.
-Describe How Use of This Type of Technology to Support Healthcare a Decision
During the assessment, it allows the nurse, or healthcare worker, to log in with their specific
credentials; nurses can see the patient name, the treating team, what medication the patient has
due, log what medications administered, and compare drugs to vital signs or lab values, and
notify if the medication should be administered or not. An example of this would be a patient on
cardiac medications, first assessing blood pressure and or heart rate before administering
