Mars
Mars is among the eight planets of the solar system. Initially the planets were known to be nine
in number, however, about three decades ago astronomers started questioning the existence of
the ninth planet that is Pluto. In 2006 astronomers in unison agreed that mars is a dwarf planet
and ruled it out as a planet. However researchers have discovered another planet which is still
under study on whether to be grouped as a real planet or not and therefore, they still call it planet
x. In the meantime, mars still remains to be the second smallest planet after mercury. Mars is the
fourth planet from the sun.
Mythically mars is named after the Roman god of war. Its rusty red surface is a symbol of
destruction caused by war. Researchers have shown that beneath the rusty surface, microbial life
could be supported. Mars has a radius of about 3,388.5km with its diameter being almost half of
that of the earth. It has a gravity that is approximately 38 percent of that of the Earth’s. Just as
the planet Earth, Mars also rotates on its own axis and takes approximately an hour longer than
the time taken by the Earth to complete a single rotation. This difference in time taken to
complete a single rotation occurs because the orbital distance of the mars is slightly longer than
that of the Earth. As the planet Mars revolves around the sun, the hemisphere that faces the sun
experiences summer and spring, while the hemisphere facing away from the sun experiences
winter. Mars also experiences the equinoxes. During equinox, both the hemispheres experiences
the same amount of sunlight. It occurs twice in a year. The seasons of Mars are slightly different
from those of the Earth. This difference occurs because of several reasons, one being the
difference in orbital distance. The axis of rotation of mars is about 25 degrees from the plane of
its orbit. A complete year in Mars takes 687 days of the Earth. This duration of a year also
contributes to the difference of the seasons between Mars and the Earth. This implies that a
season in the Mars lasts longer than it does in the Earth. Another reason for the disparity of the
