Prosocial Behaviors in Social Psychology
Prosocial behavior is a combination of several actions such as sharing, helping, comforting
and cooperating (Thielmann, et al., 2020). Prosocial behavior carries with it various benefits.
One of the benefits is that it boosts ones moods; many researchers have found out that
individuals who engage in prosocial behavior do have better moods for example one who often
help others will rarely possess a negative mood. Another benefit for those who engage in
prosocial behavior is the social support. Research hold that social support is the best preventive
measure to risks such as use of strong drinks, loneliness and depression. It also helps in reducing
stress as stress emerges from negative thoughts which is rarely experienced by one who is
engaged in prosocial behavior.
Some researchers have opted to ignore the single and uniform dimension of the prosocial
behavior and have decided to divide it into three types based on the purpose of their production.
They have divided it into three types which include; Proactive: Include prosocial behaviors
which mainly benefits self; Reactive: Include prosocial behavior in which the actions are dictated
by ones needs; Altruistic: Include prosocial behavior aimed at benefitting others without
necessarily considering personal gain.
Other researchers argue that, altruism has got a different concept and deny it as a form of
prosocial behavior. From the initial definition of prosocial behavior, it is a giving hand behavior
that holds on some gain to self, however, altruism is help that is absolutely derived from concern
for the one in need. Some also argue that some people only engage in altruism just to be praised
by others.
