PROBLEM-INTERVENTION-COMPARISON-OUTCOME-TIME (PICOT) APPROACH 2
Problem-Intervention-Comparison-Outcome-Time (PICOT) Approach
Introduction
PICOT is an abbreviation of Population/Patient Problem Intervention Comparison
Outcome Time. The population problem is the disease or any health issue affecting a patient and
the patient's age, sex, and race. Intervention elaborates the plan to attend to the patient, such as
incorporating specific tests, medications, and therapies (Palmgren et al., 2016). The alternative to
the original strategy, which is a different form of treatment or no treatment, is contrasted. The
outcome elaborates on the results that are being pursued. In comparison, time indicates the
timeframe context needed to solve the dilemma of the patient at hand.
Health promotion and disease prevention programs focus on safeguarding people.
Initiatives for health promotion aim to involve, promote and encourage the choice of healthier
behaviors to improve the risk of chronic diseases and other diseases (Whittingham & Nilsson,
2019). To minimize the development and occurrence of chronic diseases and other diseases,
disease prevention is separate from health promotion. Wellness, on the other hand, is linked to
well-being and the prevention of diseases. Wellness is defined as the attitudes and operating
decisions of an individual that lead to positive health behaviors and results.
Health promotion strategies and disease prevention also address social health factors
which impact modifiable risk behaviors. Social determinants of health are the economic, social,
cultural, and political conditions under which people are created, developed and lived that
influence health status (Palmgren et al., 2016). Tobacco use, poor eating behaviors, and physical
lack that contribute to chronic disease development are, for example, modifiable risk behaviors.
