THE EASTMAN KODAK COMPANY 2
Introduction
The Eastman Kodak Company is a company that deals in photography and produces
products related to basic analog photography. The company is still a public company and does
some considerable-sized business, but it is, in general, a shadow of its former self. Kodak, as it is
more commonly known, was a major multinational in the 20
th
century and was involved in the
production of photos through the use of film. The decline of Kodak can be attributed to several
factors: poor change leadership and inability to keep up with technology.
Challenges of Technological Change for Kodak
While Kodak was the first company to design a digital camera, the company fell behind
its competitors as time went on (Yuzawa, 2018) and could not effectively produce digital
cameras that could compete with those produced in Japan in early 2000. When it came to making
changes to digital technology, the company was slow to adapt to the changing times, and as a
result, they were unable to meet customer needs over time which reduced their market share.
One technical aspect was that the company was very reliant on the sale of film and
physical pictures through their paper. They had developed the market structure to increase sales
through film and cameras that used films to capture the images. While the firm did have digital
cameras, they were unwilling to fully adopt them and encourage customers to buy them as they
did not want the cameras to eat into their sales of films and photo papers. The idea that the two
groups of cameras, both digital and the other, could coexist. All this made the company retain
considerable focus and efforts in the sales of films, which was rapidly declining at the time.
