Issues in Patient Education: Time Constraints
From the beginning of times, the sick have always patients have always been dependent
on the education provided by the doctors to enable them to take action against any ailment.
Doctors or physicians in the United States have had issues concerning patients` education, these
doctors only spend around fifteen to twenty minutes with the patients. Patients on the other hand
spend close to two hours during any visit to the doctor or physician. This disconnect of
information from the physician to the patient has brought about serious health illiteracy on the
patient`s side. The presumption has always been that low health literacy means that physician
communication is poorly understood, leading to incomplete self-health management and
responsibility and incomplete health care utilization (Paterick et al., 2017). This paper will
therefore discuss in detail theissues in patient education giving priority to the time constraints
factor in the patient education.
The time constraints factor can to a larger extent compromise both patient satisfaction
and the quality of care provided by the physicians. Time constraints are mostly seen during the
short time visits to the doctor, during short time visits the doctors are more likely to drift away
from the published guidelines on medical management. This has seen most doctors prescribe
additional medication to the patients' something considered unnecessary. However, physicians
can use the person-based approach in dealing with the short time patients` visits to the hospital or
clinic. The Person-Based approach can help to optimize interventions to maximize acceptability
and engagement (Bradbury et al., 2018).
