The French Renaissance Era
It was a cultural and artistic movement in France between the 15
th
and early 17
th
centuries, which is
associated with the pan European Renaissance. It was a word first used by the French historian Jules
Michelet to define the artistic and cultural “rebirth” of Europe. The Renaissance also promoted the
rediscovery of classical philosophy, literature and art.
There were several causes identified by historians for the emergence of the Renaissance following
the Middle Ages, such as: Increased interaction between different cultures, the rediscovery of
ancient Greek and roman texts, the emergence of humanism, different artistic and technological
innovations, and the impacts of conflict and death.
The Middle Ages (also known as Medieval Period) has several key features such as: feudalism and
devout religious faith in the form of Christianity, this along with other features combined to form a
society that was very rigid socially, religiously, and politically. This meant that the Europeans were
not open necessarily to change at the time. However, the essence of the renaissance was that
Europe had an experience of a shift in worldview and perspective. This shift was caused by new
ideas and beliefs which was exposed to Europe in the centuries before the Renaissance, which had
begun in the 14
th
century.
Another innovation that was dramatic that had led to the Renaissance was in the artistic styles and
methods used by the Renaissance painters, which is today best known for the famous artists and
their work of art. Art in the Middle Ages displayed humans as well as the world in an unrealistic but
stylized fashion. In the Renaissance artists were inspired to create sculptures and paintings that had
focused more on the realities of everyday life and real people, which was highly influenced by
humanism that helped spark the Renaissance. Also, just like scholars such as Petrarch was inspired
by Greek and Roman workers, so too were Renaissance artists, which meant realism and the human
form were important and central to new styles of art.
Another impact to the Renaissance Era was The Black Death which had devastating results in the
Middle East and Asia with dramatic death tolls, and it has caused people to question and challenge
their own religious beliefs. This was because at that time, there was no clear reasons for the spread
of the disease and people did not understand how to stop it. As a result, this set people to believe
that it was god's will and used their religious understanding to explain the spread. The large death
rate caused massive changes in the population and wealth of Europe which was seen as overall
cause of the Renaissance.
As the French Revolution was concluding, the country had adopted its slogan, “Liberty, Equality, and
Fraternity,” which was seen as a guiding principle for at least the next century. A constitutional
system was developed by the new government that shifted the power from the nobility and its
supporters.
