Forefront individuals in black history are the ones largely recognized, for they directly
took part in the real struggle for equality, civil rights, and freedom. This is usually a direct
link between the black American identity and the long history of their oppression.
Nevertheless, it would not be wise to forget those individuals that contributed to the identity
of the black people and those that optimized what their predecessors were fighting for
(Williams, 2017). In most aspects of the media, we can find black artists who have changed
the previous identity of the blacks and impacted not on their own, but the black cultural
identity in general. This paper will discuss how film director Spike Lee influenced the
Americans to examine the environment of black culture.
Spike Lee was very hyperconscious about the future of the black culture which he
influenced through film. He used his goodwill as a film director, documentarian, and
producer to directly invoke discussions on matters relating to racism, which up to date are
very prevalent in America. The movie, Do the Right Thing was his second film of the late
1980s that left an indelible mark in the black culture. In the movie hottest day of the summer,
he uses casts of white, black, Korean, and Hispanic residents living in the Bedford-
Stuyvesant part of Brooklyn to show the racial tensions that affect them in urban settings
(Turner, 2019). He later came up with Do the Right Thing, which now revealed how the
tensions exploded into violence, and in so doing the audience would have a very well-known
permanent familiar impression in their respective town dwellings. The impact was to
encourage young blacks about their opportunity to rise up and help improve whole black
America (Turner, 2019). His work has influenced many generations of black people and set a
high standard for students and filmmakers from every background. Although his films mostly
depend on black political awareness, his unique storytelling, emotional power of his work, his
