Utilitarianism
In 2015 a pharmaceutical company by the name Turing Pharmaceuticals decided to
hike the price of a drug called Daraprim overnight. This is a drug used by Cancer and Aids
patients, but the company, through its CEO Martin Shkreli skyrocketed the price from $13.50
to a whopping $750 per pill (Pollack, 2015). This was a whole 5,000 percentage increase.
Since the company is a private entity, the owners are happy with the profits made.
Utilitarian bases their choices on the way that one's joy isn't more important than
another’s. The estimation of my satisfaction isn't pretty much important than all other people
on the other side. The theories outlines that companies should expect to boost happiness over
the long period of time for all conscious people that are influenced or affected by the business
activity. This includes any activity which harms a significant number of individuals than it
facilitates, is viewed as untrustworthy. Utilitarians, despise Turing Pharmaceuticals and
Martin Shkreli the same. On account of the medication cost hike, the only happy people, in
this case, were investors and the organization.
The unhappy individuals were the clients of the medication and their immediate loved
ones. Also, the vast dominant part of the social media and papers were offended by the price
hiking. Unmistakably the number of people, who were extraordinarily unhappy, exceeds the
individuals who made Turing's activities unethical.
In both act-utilitarianism and Rule-Utilitarianism, it requires that we uphold those
actions and rules that result in happiness for a considerable number of individuals. Therefore,
in such a scenario of Daraprim, the utilitarianism theory would not support because the drug
price increment was done to appease the few owners.
