PEOPLES COOPERATION DURING GLOBAL CRISIS 2
Factors that Determine Peoples Cooperation during World Crisis
Risk communication impact is dependent on complex interactions between the source
of information, its content and the features of the audience. For a risk message to be effective
the source must be trusted. This trust comes in when the audience believe that the source is
unbiased, expert, not sensationalising and objective. For impact maximization the risk
communications should be armed with content that is achieves comprehension, has influence
in decision making and that triggers attention (Gamhewage, 2014). When dealing with Foods
and Vaccines, it is subsequently becoming very important to achieve risk communication that
is effective. This is because risk communication can only be successful when it is able to
make awareness of the magnitude of the danger, communicate about the danger as well as the
various precautions involved for their protection. Trust of the information and perception of
risk are some of the important factors that are crucial in determining the efficacy of risk
communication.
Perception of risk is one of the ways non contextualised, common public health risk
information dissemination can be counterproductive and dangerous. Experts believe that the
risk is usually high when the hazard is also high and it is a function of the exposed
population’s vulnerability an exposure of the said hazard. On the other hand, when the
public’s emotional engagement such as outrage and anger is high leads to greater risk
(Gamhewage, 2014). Generalizing people’s perception of risk is equally misguided as well as
dangerous. Taking into account the cultural, social, political, religious and economic factors
(C Wright Mills, 1967 p.258) related to those at risk and the event must be considered for
any communication related to the risk to be effective. Community based interventions that are
inclusive of all the relevant stakeholders from community, family and individual levels
encourage the development of suitable control and preventive action.
