Gilded Effects to the American Society between 1900 And 1920
Problems brought about urbanization and industrialization were the one that the
country grappled with during the progressive era between the 1900 and 1920. Issues such as
the control of the welfare of the public and big business were addressed by the government
through the support of the middle class urban reform movement known as progressivism.
Efforts of earlier reform movements were important in actualizing those achievements
(Rodgers). As part of the populist program, electing senators directly and the federal income
tax from where anti alcohol reform tradition of pre civil war prohibition grew. Both the
democrats and the republicans supported the movement although in 1912 the progressives
formed their own party. President Woodrow Wilson and both Roosevelt and Howard William
claimed the progressive mantle.
The city big bosses power limitation as well as the direct public participation in
matters of politics were the main objectives of progressivism. Through the imminent political
reforms was the only hope for the progressives to achieve those goals. Limiting the political
machines influence from the selection of the party candidates was initiated though a direct
primary whereby a nomination was done through a small election and all the members
allowed participating (Rodgers). They also proposed what they termed as initiative, whereby
a petition would need a specified number of signatures to move forward. Referendum was
also part of the reforms to enable the people to take part in legislation on whether a state

legislature is unable to do or unwilling. Lastly they proposed a process whereby elected
officials can be recalled from office by voters through a vote or petition (Rodgers). The
reforms were championed by Wisconsin Governor Robert LaFollette whereby the rest of the
states in the country copied his model.
The correlation of these vibrant changes championed by to majority rules system was
multifaceted. In order to cut off everything termed as degenerate union between the rich
business people and ideological group managers, dynamic reformers prevailing with regards
to moving the US Senators election from the state governing bodies to the common voters
and, in certain states, establishing new systems of recall, initiative and referenda (Rodgers).
In 1920 through the Nineteenth Amendment all the latest states that were still holding the
women suffrage were streamlined as a way of championing votes for women. To curb the
immigrant voters they also decided to tighten the registration system of voting.
So many changes took place within American Politics, culture, society, and
economics, during this period. An ordinary American would be able through the easy credit
and assembly line production to purchase a variety of consumer products. Consumption
patterns changed due to the prosperity of the 1920s whereby people started to purchase such
products as clothing, beauty products, vacuums, radios and cars (Rodgers). Automobiles were
within reach for average Americans due to credit expansion and the ability for more
consumer goods to sell.
A national media culture was in the US developed by cinema and radio contributions
in the 1920s. Americans, through availability of more disposable income were able to
entertain themselves which was because of the 1920s financial prosperity (Rodgers). New
patterns of consumption and leisure were contributed by advancement in technology and the
influx of cash in the economy. During this period commercial magazines and radio changed
