An Overview of Mental Health Policy in Hong Kong
Mental health services in Hon Kong are criticized so much and are viewed to be
inefficient compared to other Asian countries like Singapore, Taiwan, Japan and South
Korea. People in Hong Kong suffer different types of mental disorders like anxiety disorders,
personality disorders and depressive disorders. Due to prevalence of these mental disorders,
there have been several mental health policies to help to curb this problem, since the colonial
rule and also during the China sovereignty, and the main aim of these policies is to warrant
special attention to the people affected. The current mental health policy in Hing Kong is a
four in one program that is aimed at prevention, treatment, treatment of relapse and a proper
follow-up system (Tse, Tang& Kan, 2015). About prevention, a policy has been set in
hospitals to help to disseminate information to the public about the early signs and symptoms
of mental disorders among the youth so that they can take the necessary actions to be able to
prevent the disorders. The programs have also included the elderly. Early detection of mental
disorders is done, and prompt treatment and timely education concerning the disorder is done
once discovered that there are traces of the disorders. Upon detection, patients proceed to take
medication and those have common mental disorders or have not been severely affected are
recommended to visit specialist outpatient clinics provided by the hospital authority while
those that have been severely affected by the mental disorder such as schizophrenia are
always admitted to inpatient hospitals where they are provided with both proper medication
and rehabilitation services for an extended period.
The policy states that the hospital is still actively involved in the prevention of relapse
of the disorders. This is achieved by through proper subscription of the new anti-psychotic
medicine to the patients. This medicine has less debilitating effects on the user and they
greatly help to prevent the disorder from reappearing and recurring in the patient’s life. In
