The Unsustainable Consequence for Our Planet of Food Wastes.
Introduction
Food waste is a very huge global problem both to the food security of the planet and
even to the environment. It has negative effects on biodiversity, wastage of earth’s fertile
land, increased carbon footprints and acceleration of climatic change. Scientists have
suggested different ways to help to address the issue. The methods include improving the
harvesting methods, the changing of the way the foods are processed, encouraging food
balance with demand and food recycling. The traditional harvesting methods used to
encourage a lot of food waste in the farms but now researchers are coming up with better
harvesting methods. Processing methods are being improved to make sure that the foods store
for a little bit longer time to reduce wastage. Experts are also have come up with ways to help
governments and businesses all over the world to keep track of the amount of food they are
losing and find ways to cut down the wastage. In as much as these experts are trying to
minimize the consequences of food waste by coming up with the means and ways to solve the
problem of food waste, several pieces of research have revealed why governments have still
not been able to manage to maintain or sustain the consequence of food waster for our planet.
Lack of Appropriate Planning
Di Talia et al. (87), asserted that “minimizing or even sustaining the consequences of
food waste in the country has not been easy and it is rather increasing instead of decreasing”.

In his research, one of the reasons for the cause of such a scenario is the lack of appropriate
planning. Lack of proper planning especially on the buyers’ side has been the top contributors
to food waste. A lot of people buy a lot of foods without taking into consideration how and
when the food will be prepared. Sometimes people change their food preparation plans due to
reasons such as tight contemporary work schedules. Sometimes they even forget to use it on
time (Di Talia et al, 90). Most of the time is out of control of consumers to plan effectively
on how to effectively follow the plans they have and this makes the foods get expired after
which they are forced to throw it away. Lack of appropriate planning also makes the
consumers find themselves badly prepared the food and in the end, it fails to taste nice. At the
end of the day, it is wasted because no one would like to eat foods that do not taste great.
Purchasing and Preparation of too Much Food
According to Gaiani et al. (56), another reason is the buying and preparation of excess
food. Food is mostly wasted because it is excess and this has greatly affected the ability of
the government to reduce food waste and its consequences. If one buys excess food, which
the majority of the people in the country do, it is going to automatically go to waste. These
are the leftovers and partially used foods (Gaiani, 78). Sometimes partially used food is put
in the fridge and the people end up not use the food because most of the people would want
fresh foods. The same scenario applies when there is the excessive purchase of food, which
ends up passing expiry dates and therefore the foods end up looking, tasting and smelling
bad.
Errors in Processing and Keeping up with Food Policies
A research conducted by Schanes et al. (67), revealed that mistakes in industrial
processing and complying with food policies is also another reason as to why there have been
unsustainable consequences of food waste. There are always the food safety procedures and
standards which do not allow errors in industrial processing or any other compromise that
