Legalization of Equal Pay to Eliminate Gender Gap in Hong Kong
The gender gap is the difference between the payor the numeration for women and
men who are working. In many places Hong Kong included, women, are always paid less in
their places of work compared to men (Yupina, 7). For the government of China to be able to
eliminate gender gap in Hog Kong there is need to legalize equal pay between men and
women becauseits legalization will give people who feel they are being unfairly paid an
opportunity to file a complaint with Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) or sue their
employers directly in court, it will reduce the rate of discrimination in organization due to the
fear of being sued or their operations being terminated and lastly it will help to educate
people of Hong Kong City to on the importance of equal pay in the economy which at the end
of the day will make them appreciate it more and in the long run gender gap would be
reduced.
Legalization of equal pay policy in Hong Kong would greatly help workers who feel
that they are not being treated fairly to comfortably fight for their rights. Legalization of this
policy would mean that any prohibition or any norms and cultures that were there before to
prohibit equal numeration for women and men especially who did the same work and they
were paid differently because of different reasons would be completely removed (Yupina, 8).
The reasons that make women get paid less in Hong Kong include the existence of many men
in the executive posts while women are being considered as homemakers, the norm that
women tend to bear more family responsibilities and the need for them to be given maternity
leave during their delivery period. When there is the legalization of equal pay in the city all
these excuses for paying women fewer salaries and wages will be eliminated and this will
make it easy for women to fight for their rights due to the existence of a strong legal
foundation on the same.
Another reason why legalization of equal pay would eliminate gender gap roles in the
city of Hong Kong is that it will reduce the rate of discrimination in the organizations and
companies in the city. This is because the policy is documented to be one of the laws of the
land, all companies and organizations will be on toes to observe the law in order to avoid
conflicts with the government and with the local authorities in the city (Yupina, 10). This is
because failure to observe the laws would meanwithdrawal of the permit of the business by
the government and heavy fines or imprisonment of the people in charge of the unequal pay
agenda.
Legalization of equal pay will help to eliminate the gender gap in the city because
many people will be educated and many will come to appreciate the role of equal pay which
at the end of the day will make them embrace it more than ever before. As the government
legalizes the equal pay agenda, it will provide clear and vivid reasons as to why is taking such
decisions (Yupina, 12). Citizens will thus get to understand these reasons even better and they
will also find themselves obeying them because of the benefits that legalization will come
within the economy. This at the end of the day will greatly help to reduce the gender gap in
the land.
A defence claim, however, would refute the fact that legalization of equal pay in
Hong Kong would reduce the gender gap in Hong Kong. According to Chong, “although
some people working in the same roles are being paid less because of their gender, equal pay
has contributed so little to the closure of the gap”(Yupina, 12). Also, legalization will not
help much because of the lack of transparency of some companies. In as much as there is
pressure from the government for companies to disclose their pay scales still many
companies will not open up in order for them to have maximum profit benefits and this will
