Slavery and How It Should Be Taught
It is so unfortunate that 8 percent of senior high school students do not know the main
cause of the civil war was slavery. If this is the case in the senior school students, then the
most accurate assumption is that the high school students do not have the slightest idea of
what slavery was. The only problem that makes it impossible for people to accept that slavery
negatively impacted black people is the fact that they believe it was used as a civilizing tool.
This is why teachers are making gross mistakes while teaching because they are biased and
do not want to give the real impact slavery had on black people. It is bizarre for a teacher to
demonstrate what slavery is by demoralizing another student’s expectation just because of the
colour of their skin. It is also astonishing how a teacher would frame a question that implies
as if slavery was a good thing. This is so confusing to the kids, or rather the concept of
slavery would never be understood by the same students.
Children should be taught what exactly happened during the slave trade. Teachers
should understand that they should respect their code of ethics and that they should not
mislead young children. Slavery is a very sensitive matter, and it should be taught carefully
because we live in a multicultural society. In this century, teachers should be at the forefront
to make sure the coming generations do not view each other in terms of their skin colour, but
as human beings. They should make sure that the students understand that they should not
repeat the mistakes of their forefathers and should live as equals.
