Do you think that sport is a realistic tactic in creating lasting peace among nations?
In 2010, the Togo people had hopes of their national football team qualifying for the African
cup of nations. Unfortunately, the Togolese team bus was ambushed in a volatile region in
Angola, where the tournament was scheduled to take place. The gunmen killed the assistant
coach, bus driver; the team spokespersons, as well as eight others, were injured. This doesn't
mean sports cannot be used as a tactic to foster lasting peace. Sports are viewed as means of
mending fences, healing wounds as well as rising above differences among nations and
cultures. Olympics is the leading ambassador of sports as a tool for diplomacy as its main aim
is to build a better and peaceful world through sports. Their symbol of the interlocking rings
shows the five continents coming together, which creates a very harmonious atmosphere. The
Football World Cup is another event that precedes prejudice and politics in the fact that even
those countries at war usually cease for a few weeks to celebrate and show support for their
national teams. For example, in Ivory Coast, the celebrated footballer Didier Drogba was able
to publicly speak about the importance of the 2006 world cup in ending the civil war. As
much as it cannot be determined the role football played in ending that conflict, a peace
agreement was drafted. Sports have been used by leaders across the globe as a show of
goodwill and reconciliation. In 1971, for example, the American Ping-pong players were
invited by the Chinese government for exhibition matches; this was the first time since 1949
for Americans to be allowed in the country. President Nixon Richard, within that year,
China's ping pong exhibition, was able to visit China, which was a historic trip hence ending
unfriendly relations that lasted for two decades. By inviting the conflicting groups to play
sports together, it eliminates hatred and bridge cultural divides, and this is how the non-profit
