“THE QUALITY OF KNOWLEDGE IS BEST MEASURED BY HOW MANY
PEOPLE ACCEPT IT.” DISCUSS THIS CLAIM WITH REFERENCE TO TWO
AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE.
Before discussing the “quality of knowledge” and how it may be measured it is important to
understand what the term “knowledge” entails. Knowledge is the possession of information
which is acquired through ways of knowing (WOKs), which Plato defines as “justified true
belief”.

The knowledge we acquire has different functions and roles in explaining our reality.
Regarding the title, I associate several concepts with “quality of knowledge” such as reliability,
accuracy and validity. In brief, “quality of knowledge” refers to the value assigned to
knowledge. A way of examining this is through looking at the word “value” quality is the
value that people accredit to something, and value constantly changes over time as the world
progresses. Following this, it can be argued that the perceived quality of knowledge changes
over time depending on how much traction and acceptance the knowledge receives.
In this case, the method determining the value is how many people accept it. The word
“accept” implies that knowledge claims have been approved and deemed “correct”. This may
be by the society, authority, or other figures. The way knowledge is viewed in the different
areas of knowledge (AOKs) shows that areas such as the natural sciences and mathematics are
deemed to be of high quality due to how they provide objective facts, whereas AOKs such as
the Arts, indigenous knowledge systems and human sciences are based on interpretation,
observation, personal and shared knowledge. Hence, it can be concluded that knowledge quality
can be measured differently in an ultimate goal of determining its value. This gives rise to the
following knowledge question: “How is the quality of knowledge measured in the natural and
human sciences?
