Myths, Folktales, and Fairy Tales
Instructions: Use a variety of online sources through your own research to answer and
provide examples for the questions below.
1. Find several examples of myths from different cultures around the world. Please list
the myths you've chosen and from what part of the world they originate. What
similarities do you notice among the myths? Do you believe that these myths are
influenced by the culture that they originate from? Why or why not?
Ra, the sun god, from Egyptian mythology
Zeus, the sky and thunder god, from Greek mythology
Both of these myths involve a god that represents an element. Ra was said to rule all parts
of the created world. This included the sky, earth, and underworld. Zeus is the sky and
thunder god. He is said to rule as king of Mount Olympus. Both of Greek and Egyptian
mythology have many gods, many of which represent an element.
2. Of all the myths that you've come across in this course (including this lab) and in
your education and life prior to this course, which one is your favorite? Why? What
is the myth about?
My favorite myth is still Medusa from Greek mythology. She has been an interest of mine
for as long as I can remember. In later versions, Medusa was said to be a beautiful maiden.
But Athena punished her when Poseidon raped her in Athena's temple. Athena punished
Medusa by turning her beautiful hair into venomous snakes. She also was able to turn
anybody who looked at her into stone. Later on Perseus was able to slay her, which is a
whole other story.
3. Identify and explain (in your own words), what folklore is.

are stories involving human beings but are not always based in fact. An example of this is
the legend of King Arthur. Folktales are stories that reflect a culture and have been passed
down generations orally. A common type of folktale is a fable, which often features animals
with human characteristics. Fairy tales involve opposing forces and typically have a happy
ending. Many fairy tales also take place "far away" or "a far time ago".
5. Whether games, recipes, proverbs, songs or stories from friends, family or
community members, elements of folklore are all around us. Think about a group
that you belong to and consider the folklore that exists within your group or around
you in life. Describe this folklore and the purpose that this piece of folklore serves?
I don't belong to any particular group but I do believe that karma will catch up with
people. Karma is the belief that the energy a person puts out will come back to them.
Another common way of explaining karma is what goes around comes around.
6. Do some research on fairy tales. In your own words, define and describe what fairy
tales are. Explain some characteristics of fairy tales and provide an example of a
fairy tale.
A fairy tale is a types of folklore that often involves magic and/or true love and always has
a happy ending. An example of a fairy tale is Rapunzel. In the end, Rapunzel is reunited
with the prince and they live happily ever after.
