The Amazon Women: Is There Any Truth to the Myth?
1. Why do you think that the article begins with a description of Wonder Woman?
This article most likely begins with a description about Wonder Woman because that's what most people associate
Amazons with. Opening this article with a well-known superhero will draw a reader in to learn more about
Amazons.
2. William Moulton Marston said that “Not even girls want to be girls so long as our feminine archetypes
lacks force, strength and power.” Does this quote reflect the myths described in the Unit?
This quote does not reflect the myths in this unit. The warriors in this unit are strong because they are women.
These women being strong and powerful is not an addition to them, it is a part of them. These women are proud
to strong and independent and do not wish to be anything but.
3. Why do you think that some scholars perceived female-dominated societies as better than the current
male-dominated ones?
Female-dominated societies are sometimes perceived as better because women are seen as more compassionate
and caring. Women would rather resolve and issue quickly and efficiently rather than have a drawn-out war.
Women are also typically not power hungry and look to find solutions that can benefit everyone.
4. Why do you think that the Amazons became so important in the founding myth of Athens?
The Amazons became important in the founding myth of Athens because these women were seen to be heroic,
which wasn't common for women.
Famous Viking Warrior Was a Woman, DNA Reveals
5. The article states that the idea of women Viking warriors was believed to be “mythological
embellishments—a belief colored by modern expectations of gender roles.” What does this mean?
This means that women warriors were assumed to be made-up stories to make women seem more equal and
powerful in Viking history.
6. Why do you think that the scholarly community did not believe Anna Kjellström’s conclusion that the
skeleton was a woman?
I think that the scholarly community did not believe the skeleton was a woman because of the image that men give
to powerful people. Historians are constantly erasing the accomplishments of women and this is no exception.
