Tracking of units in aircraft design
It is important to keep track of measurement units both in the design and operation of an
airplane. Continuously tracking these units helps to ensure that the aircraft remains in its best
operation state. That, therefore, makes the pilot be in full control of the aircraft. Having these
units vary from normal could seriously affect factors as the center of gravity of the airplane
which causes instability and is likely to cause accidents (Ackerman et al, 2017). Tracking these
units helps to determine the speed required for takeoff. Failure to give a correct reading may
cause the takeoff to happen too soon resulting in shock or making it prolonged that is likely to
make the aircraft go beyond the runway.
Additionally, a change in units may cause a sharp climb which would make the pilot out
of control causing the aircraft to fall on its back. Therefore, it is paramount that tracking units of
design and operations for all aircraft to make to reduce the likelihood of accidents (Friend &
Friend, 2015).
Accident due to error in metric conversion
A Boeing 767 belonging to Air Canada on the July 29th, 1983 ran out of fuel midair, and
both engines stopped working. However, the pilots made a safe landing touching the ground at a
high speed of 180knots. Only two people were injured. The primary cause of the accident is that
ground engineers knew that the fuel gauge was not functioning. They opted to use drip sticks to
take measurements of fuel. However, when carrying out their mathematical operations, they used
wrong units i.e. instead of Kg to L factor, the engineers used Lb. to L factor (Friend & Friend,
2015). The pilot saw the amount of fuel that the airplane and he okayed it as he thought it was in
