WALMART 2
The obligation that a business assumes toward society is what corporate social
responsibility is. For a business to be considered socially responsible, they need to be able to
create a substantial positive effect within society. Within corporate social responsibility there are
four different levels, legal, economic, philanthropic, and ethical. The organization will need to
have all four of the levels to be successful (Bateman, Snell & Konopaske 2016). One of the
better organizations that demonstrate corporate social responsibility is Wal-Mart.
There are three main principals that make up Wal-Marts corporate social responsibilities.
The first principal they utilize is that they are always creating economic opportunities for all the
different suppliers and employees. Wal-Marts second core principal is ensuring the sustainability
of the operations for both planet and their employees. Walmart likes to ensure that they are
building stronger communities where their different retailers are operating (Dudovskiy 2016).
When we consider Walmart’s different social responsibilities, they two they have more of
a focus on would be their philanthropic and economical causes. The CEO of Walmart back in
2015, decided to create three different goals for the company. The three goals are to create zero
waste, sell products that will support both people and the environment, and to have 100%
renewable energy supplying their stores. All three of these goals were created to help contribute
to Walmart’s various economic responsibilities. After establishing those three new goals,
Walmart needed to start setting thing in motion to make them reality. All within the first year of
establishing these new goals, Walmart was able to prevent 849 trees from being cut dur to their
recycling policies. They were able to cut their usage of water down 417,714 gallons compared to
the previous year. They are working on creating more efficient stores that will reduce energy
consumption 20% by 2020.
