1. In Hidden Figures there are three main characters who are friends yet they pursue different
roles in NASA and in STEM. Katherine is a mathematician who is introduced into a all white
male space task force. She fights against racial stereotypes as she must run back and forth
from a “colored bathroom” and she is forced to use a different coffee pot. She points out the
disparities and is granted into the workplace more openly as a woman and a colored person.
Dorothy is at first an administrator who works with the other computing women. She wants
to establish herself as an administrator as she does not officially have a title or the paycheck
to be stated as such. She then works on the IBM system with programming. She fights
against the low paying wages of black women in NASA and she also favors herself into the
new field of technology which serves as necessary later on. Mary works in the computing
room yet she has aspirations to become an engineer. She fights against segregation of
schools and enrolls after a court hearing in a night school to become an engineer. She is
also the only woman in the class.
2. Other people did not start standing up for these strong women until their work ethics were
proven. For Katherine, Al stood up for her because she deserved to have a bathroom close
by to ensure she was getting as much work in as possible. Dorothy stood up for herself as
strongly as she could and ultimately was accepted by her male companions once she
showed her value and knowledge. It is interesting to note that Vivian, the receptionist, did
not help Dorothy in any way and actually made it harder for Dorothy to get any sort of
promotion. Mary was also denied by Vivian as she was trying to apply to become an
engineer and Vivian made it clear that that was impossible. Mary got reassurance from her
husband and the judge which made her career ambitions possible. It was important to have
male allies and white allies as all of the women faced challenges of being black women in a
competitive work environment.
3. The experience of women and people of color now versus the 1960s in STEM has changed
a lot. There is a greater acceptance of women and people of color into all environments and
workplaces. Although women have the ability to attend college, they are still discriminated
against in wage and in moving up. In the 1960s women were given low paying receptionist
jobs that were in assistance to men. Women and women of color were not treated equally in
any sense when it came to jobs. Women of color would be behind the scenes working on
typing or computing, the white women would be seen more.
4. I think this movie is just coming out in 2016 as not to mess with the fight women and people
of color are still fighting. If too much victory is shown then people may degrade the
movements currently to be insignificant and pass it off as people of color and women look
equal to white men. Women and men are definitely not equal even in 2021 and this movie
just shows how far women and women of color have come yet how much farther they can
go.
