Practice Writing a Lab Report
Instructions: Use the lab example given to complete the Practice Writing a Lab Report activity.
Please fill in this lab report with the appropriate information and data.
Title:
Mia Schou, Mrs. Winebrenner, The Effects of Chemical and Organic Fertilizer on Plant Growth
Objective(s):
The purpose of this lab, is to determine what effects chemical and organic fertilizer will have on
the growth of a plant.
Hypotheses:
John’s hypothesis is, the organic fertilizer will make the plants grow taller than the chemical
fertilizer.
Variables:
Independent Variable: type of fertilizer: chemical, organic, none
Dependent Variable: rate of growth in the plants with different fertilizers.
Controlled Variable: type of seed, soil, and water
Materials:
o 3 pots
o 3 seeds (same type)
o Soil
o Organic fertilizer
o Chemical fertilizer
o Water
o Ruler
Procedures:
The procedures are listed in Practice Writing a Lab Report Activity. You do not need to include
them here.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, Johns hypothesis was incorrect. He predicted the plant with organic
fertilizer would grow the tallest. Once the experiment concluded, he was proven otherwise when
the chemical fertilizer exhibited the largest growth.
Based on the data in the table, the plant with chemical fertilizer produced the best results.
On day five the plant already hit 0.5cm, it began showing results two days before the organic
fertilizer (the runner up). And on day ten the plant with chemical fertilizer had grown to be
5.2cm. The plant with organic fertilizer reached a height of 3.8cm on day ten, determining it to
be the second most effective.
The plant with no fertilizer did not give impressing results. With its first sign of growth
showing on the tenth day, and only reaching a height of 0.2cm. This plant was easily determined
to be the least effective. This experiment could be tested further by, adding additional types of
fertilizer and testing the effects on the plant, compared to the two we have currently.
Questions:
I would improve this experiment by adding a new independent variable being the type of
seeds used. Then I would test how the two fertilizers effected different plants growth rate. I could
